How to choose a chess set

By board size. 27–32 cm boards are compact and good for travel and children. 36–42 cm is a comfortable size for home play. 48–54 cm boards have roomy squares and large pieces, which is why clubs choose them for serious games.

By pieces. Tournament sets use Staunton-style pieces marked with a number: the higher the number, the larger the pieces. In our range a No. 3 king is 58 mm, No. 4 is 75–85 mm, No. 5 is 90 mm, and No. 6 and No. 7 are 95 mm. A 95 mm king matches the size FIDE recommends for tournaments.

By purpose. For a gift, people usually choose handmade sets with a padded interior. For travel, choose magnetic chess, whose pieces stay on the board. You can also buy chess pieces and tournament boards separately.
